PASSION CONFIRMED

With VBS right around the corner my sermon this morning was focused on the faith of our children. Since Wednesday as I was meditating on the story of David and Goliath (which was what my message was on) God continued to really touch and move my heart. He continued to reveal to me throughout the week what message He wanted to share with our congregation.

My initial calling into ministry and the passion that drove me into wanting to serve the Kingdom was because of the younger generation. God has always put this passion within me for the younger generation. I have this deep rooted conviction that God views all people, all ages as His children. When I see a child I don’t see a child, rather an instrument of God, whom He desires to move in and through.

This passion and conviction of mine was confirmed once again to me personally during my sermon today. As I was preaching about the importance of faith within our children and how God moves through His children I was reminded of my passions. This was really needed for me, especially during this busy time of preparing for VBS. It was needed to be reminded that I am serving God out of passion not responsibility or burden.

DUMPLINGS

Today was our final day of VBS decorations! I was at church from 2-9 with other brothers and sisters and we finally completed all of our decorations. It was a long, exhausting and busy day but a successful one. After about 3 weeks we have finished and it feels great.

I left church and was on my way to drop someone off when one of our church members who is a close family friend gave me a call. She knew I was home alone since my family is in Chicago over the weekend. It was almost 10 but she told me to come over to their house. To be honest I was a little tired and wanted to go home but I went anyways and boy am I glad I went.

Their family and I spent about an hour making dumplings today for a late night snack. It was super fun and ultimately super delicious. The whole time was filled with laughter and great conversation.

As I was over at their home I couldn’t help but be thankful and joyful. Thankful that through the relationships God has allowed I have people who I can call family. People who I can encounter God’s love through and with. Church really is a beautiful place where special relationships are able to be formed all through God’s love.

SEEING THE LOVE

My mom is going to Korea this weekend. This will be her first time since 2008. That’s 9 whole years she hasn’t been able to see all of her siblings and most importantly my grandma. My grandma has gotten suddenly ill so we decided it would be best for my mom to go spend time with her in Korea.

My mom always has the desire to go to Korea to see her family since all of her side lives over there. But due to taking care of the family she never really gets the chance. She really deserves this trip and I am so glad she has this opportunity to reunite with her family and spend time with my grandma.

I’m not the only one who thinks she deserves this time for herself. I was shocked and it really moved me to see how many people wanted to bless her before going on this trip. Multiple people have been stopping by our house over the last few days giving her cards and gifts supporting her and all telling her how much she deserves this time.

My mom is someone who loves unconditionally. Through her love I experience the selfless love of God. It’s been really nice being able to see her receive love and be loved by others. Through the gestures of many I know she has been encountering the love of God.

LITTLE BIG BROTHER

Being at the same church all your life you gain brothers and sisters that literally are siblings to you. I’m blessed to say I have a countless number of those. There is one little brother of mine in particular that I truly view as a brother. It’s been nearly 10 years since I’ve known him and through it all he has always called me Hyung which means older brother in Korean and has always looked at me as his own.

Tonight was his graduation and this was actually my first non-family graduation I’ve ever attended. Being there and hearing his name be called and see him walk across that stage was really special. It meant way more than just him graduating high school but rather him completing a chapter in his life that contained many ups and downs and forming into the man of God he has been created to be.

I am truly thankful and blessed to have the ability to see my younger brothers and sisters grow through multiple seasons of life. It really means a lot to have the ability to be a part of someone’s life throughout the years and have them be a part of mine. I say this often but I am always grateful that God has provided little siblings like him in my life that I’ve always wanted.

PERSONAL PRAYERS

These past few weeks at Refresh we’ve had great opportunities to share prayer requests as a community and pray for one another. But today I wanted to do something different. Even though it’s extremely important to pray for others I believe it’s crucial to pray for yourself. If you’re like me interceding is sometimes easier than personal prayers, but I believe it’s very important to learn and challenge yourself to spend personal intimate time with God.

We started off with worship and then for the remainder of the time we scattered in the room and had our own individual times with the Lord in prayer. It was a beautiful sight seeing my brothers and sisters spending intentional time on their own in the presence of the Father and taking steps closer to Him.

For me it was a really powerful and needed time. To be honest it’s been a while since I’ve spent intentional time praying for my personal relationship with God and basking in His presence. It was truly rejuvenating, convicting and uplifting to have that time on my own with God.

BEHIND THE SCENES

It’s officially our third week of doing vbs decorations. We have been meeeting every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for these past weeks doing these decorations. Each day we have been spending about 5 hours getting things done. Since I’ve been at church so much doing decorations I’ve been asked by countless number of people why we are spending so much time decorating for vbs, why we are doing it so ahead of time, why we are focusing so much on decorations.

The answer that continues to pop up in my head is “why not?” Why not spend hours and days into preparing something for our children. Why not give our time and energy to put value in this ministry. Why not?

A lot hit me today while I was doing decorations. The reality is, the hours we put cutting things out, taping things up etc. won’t really be noticed. Some of the things that take so much time don’t even look like a big deal. But it doesn’t matter, it’s the heart that goes behind it all. Honestly if we were doing all this for applause and human eyes we wouldn’t be able to do it, point blank. But the only reason we do what we are doing is for the Kingdom of God. Period.

This experience is helping me be appreciative of all the people that serve God and the church behind the scenes. A lot of times it’s us the pastors who get the appreciation and attention. But the reality is for us to be able to do our job we need others like secretaries, prayer teams, media team, janitors etc. God has really been leading me to being thankful and noticing all the people who serve that goes unnoticed. For one part of the body to move we need the other parts.

GO FISH

There has been one thing that I’ve been desiring to do and looking forward to in doing these past couple months but couldn’t do due to my busy schedule; go fish. I really don’t have many hobbies but fishing is one thing I love doing. During finals week that was one of my biggest motivators, to finish strong so I can get back to the lake and go do what I love. Fishing was the first thing on my agenda to do after finishing the semester but it took me 12 days, due to vbs and ministry, to finally get out there, and today was the day!

I had a clear schedule today to do nothing but fish. I felt like a kid this morning getting my stuff ready, filling up on gas, stopping by the bait shop and finding a spot on the lake. Something about getting out in nature and fishing brings me true joy and peace. Fishing is one of the few things that I do where I really clear my mind from all burdens and find rest.

Literally not even 10 minutes into throwing in my line I caught my first fish of the year and it was a bass! I was ecstatic. That feeling of excitement really is satisfying and only people who fish really can understand that feeling.

Even though that was the only fish I caught today it was a good day. I’m so thankful for days like this where God allows me to find rest and have fun. Where no worries hold me down and only joy is in my heart. There really is something special about being out in God’s creation and enjoying a beautiful day doing what you love.

PROUD MOMENTS

One of the biggest blessings in being at one church for all my life and serving at my home church is having the opportunity and privilege to grow with others through the years and witness growth in others. These people who I call my congregation are not just my church members but family, my brothers and sisters in Christ. Especially the youth kids, I’ve seen mostly all of them grow since they were in children’s ministry, and today we had graduation service sending off our high school seniors who all have a special place in my heart. All throughout today’s service I felt more than a proud leader but a proud older brother to see my younger siblings completing one chapter and moving on to the next.

  • Seeing them stand before the congregation as young men and women of God I could see how much they have grown. Throughout their years in youth group they have been molded by the hands of God to fit into the identity He has created them.
  • One of our youth boys who truly is like a blood brother to me sang the offering song with his mom. It brought tears to my eyes to see him worshipping God along side his mom in closing this chapter of his life.
  • Also during the service we had a time to promote our VBS. We had our body worship team come on stage and perform one of the VBS songs. As I sat there watching I couldn’t help but feel so proud of my team.

These moments are what ministry is all about. Pouring into the lives of others to draw them closer to God and bring growth. Days like today I’m truly blessed and thankful God gives me the countless opportunities to serve Him and my brothers and sisters in Christ.

HAPPY WORKER

We had a graduation party at church today for all our high school graduates in youth group. It was a great time of fellowship and enjoying each other’s company. After the celebrations we did vbs decorations with everyone that is volunteering. But we had one kid help who actually can’t make it during vbs, but through him I was really blessed.

The AC was not working today at church. It couldn’t have been a worse day, with it being over 80 and extremely humid. Inside of the church felt even worse. I tried to stay positive as possible but I was nonstop sweating and I found myself even complaining.

But through it all that one boy was smiling for the whole 5+ hours he was helping out. The reality is he didn’t even have to be there, he didn’t have to help. But out of the kindness in his heart and his desire to serve God he was giving it his everything.

Constantly he would come up to me and ask what more he could do. That attitude really was inspiring and encouraging to me. God gave me conviction through him today. Conviction to always be optimistic and be joyful in all circumstances serving God.

THUMBS UP TO PRAYER

For my first step in my ordination process I have been put into a mentoring group with other candidates and two mentor pastors that I have been meeting with since January. We only have one more group meeting before this phase is over, but before the meetings are over we meet with the mentors alone and today was that day for me.

I met with my two mentor pastors to talk about what they have thought of me throughout these past months. Then we discussed the results of a psychological assessment I took. One of the only negative things that came up on the assessment and after my examination with the psychologist was that I have high anxiety. So my mentors just wanted to know more about my situation and why I felt this way.

After we talked about it we moved on to different topics and was about to conclude our meeting when suddenly one of my mentors asked if she could pray for me. They both laid hands on me and prayed for healing and break through. In that moment I experienced a true sense of freedom and could feel the Holy Spirit really stirring in my heart.

That time of prayer was really unexpected but super needed. God knew that I needed that and He provided through the obedience of my mentors. Moments like this I am reminded of the true power of prayer.
